The philosophical perspective, founded by the
German philosopher Husserl, that in the
social sciences concentrates on phenomena as
objects of perception (rather than as facts
or occurrences that exist independently) in
attempting to examine the ways people think
about and interpret the world around them. It
has been practised by the philosophers
Heidegger, Sartre, and Merleau-Ponty. In
contrast to positivism or `scientific'
philosophy, phenomenology sees reality as
essentially relative and subjective, and uses
such tools as ethnomethodology and symbolic
interactionism to focus on the structure of
everyday life.
